This crystal opal is from the Allawah Field, Lightning Ridge, Australia, an area famed for producing the world's finest black and crystal opals. In Aboriginal legend the Dreamtime Creator gave birth to the opal coming down to earth in a giant rainbow and landing on a pile of rocks on a stony ridge. When the sun rose the next morning these rocks glittered and poured out flashes of all the colours of the rainbow.
This particular example has attributes of symmetry, good size and a high degree of transparency displaying lively brilliant colours. Green is dominant and produces a 'rolling flash pattern'.
